A day in the life of Uggs
A day in the life of Uggs Alfie Sherrin or Uggs as he is known at home is my first home bred Selkirk Rex , he is a lovely Cream Colour point curly short hair who has the most lovely temperament ever . He was born into a litter of 4 , 2 curly & 2 variant's . He was a very special boy from day one and his ugly duckling looks made him stand out but there was something about him that you could not help but fall in love with . Could it be those big blue eyes , that very friendly temperament , chubby little checks that you just wanted to pinch or his very loud purr ??? I would say all of these thing really . Uggs soon became everyone's friend and no matter who came over it was always where is the little ugly one he's just so cute .

At almost 5 weeks of age Uggs almost died , i had gone out to work early in the morning and left the litter happily playing with mum on arriving home at lunch time all the kittens bar Uggs wobbled over to greet me but no uggs ? I thought it was a little strange so went to find what was keeping him as he could be a lazy little boy at times . I found him in his bed and picked him up but on doing so noticed he was very floppy and thought he was dead . I burst into tears and ran to my sister in the next room she grabbed him off me and said he's not dead he just made a funny sound , quick i said get him in the car . We got in the car and drove there as fast as we could i ran in and said my kitten dying help so a vet rushed him strait in and would not let us in the room for what seemed forever . About 20 minerts later the vet' came out and called us in , Uggs was still not moving and i was not he was in a coma and only had a 20% chance of serving . I don't care do what you can i told them so they sent me home and said they would all with any news .

2 hours passed , still no news , 3 , then 4 , i had convinced myself he had died and they were trying to find the words to tell me then the phone rang it was my vet's . Oh no i thought please don't let it be bad news , it was positive news as i was told he had opened his eyes and was now breathing on his own but his blood sugar was still very low and despite them giving him insculen he was still not able to regulate it him self . They went on to exsplaine it was like a kind of diabeties and is common n some young animals and said most will grow out of it by 10 - 12 weeks of age . They kept uggs in for the night and said they would call me in the morning to let me know how he is doing , no i said you can call me anytime of the day or night if anything changes and he goes down hill i want to know ... They agreed they would call me and i got no sleep at all that night worrying about him 8 am and the phone ring's it was the vet's again , with more news on my poor little baby Uggs , please let it be good news . It was they said he was off the drip and playing around he had taken some food but did not seem to like what they had very much . I hopped straight in to he car to go and see him armed with a selection of his fave food . On arriving at the vet's they explained to me that the next few day's would be touch and go as he could still go into a coma again but agreed that if he was eating and regulating his own sugar by teatime that they would let him home with me . I went home feeling a lot happier with how he was doing . I got a call to say he was able to come home but would need to have his inculan daily and he would need to go into the vet's to check his blood sugar , that's fine i said i just want to get him home .
5 weeks old Over the next few day's he would go into the vet's to daily and be checked over then after a week they said he could have it controlled at home and checked on a weekly basis so that's what we did .
It did take it's affect on Uggs with him seeming to be much smaller than his brothers and sister but i was just happy for him to be alive .
Uggs went from strength to strength and by the age of 12 weeks was given the all clear and no longer has any trouble with his blood . At around 14 weeks he suddenly seemed to grow in what seemed over night and was getting bigger and bigger .
6 weeks old I thought he had such a sweet temperament that i would book him in as a pedigree pet at the Rex show with is sister in the pedigree kitten open but i was sharply stopped in my track's by a friend who asked why i was putting Ugg's in the pedigree pet as she thought he had nice type from his pictures . I thought he was a tad on the Ugly side i said no try him in the Kitten open she said , so i did . He then went on to get 1st and BOB in his kitten open and 1st in all his side classes giving him his first ever red card day :-) Not bad for the ugly duckling of the litter i thought .
8 weeks old
Next i took Uggs to RAGTIME TICA where he was only just a couple of day's into the adult class so i was not expecting him to do very well at all . Again he decided to put on his best look how ugly cute i am face and win everyone over . He ended the day with 6x1st colour 6x first devision 6xBOB and 1x 10th best cat all breed final , 1x 8th best cat all breed final , 1x 4th best cat all breed final and an amazing 1x 1st best cat all breed final making him a TICA Champion at just 8 months & 10 days old i was in shock and over the moon at how well my little Uggs had done clearly he is no longer a ugly duckling but a lovely young Swan who i hope will continue to do well at shows . Every day i am just so happy and grateful that he is still with me and think of how easily it could have all be so very different .

12 weeks old Uggs attended his first GCCF adult show at just over 9 months of age where he once again shocked me by getting 1st in his open class and winning his 1st CC but that was not enough for Uggs he then went on to get BOB . A big thank you to all his judges . Uggs will be staying with me to do some showing and may have one litter of very special kittens in the future , so watch the space . Uggs carries the dilute gene and may also carry the long hair and tabby gene .

Uggs with his friend Mungo , you can see how much Ugg's has grown as Mungo is a nice big boy .
